Regular Professional Dental Care

Dentists – not only for when problems occur.

During a recent study (1), it was found that just over a quarter of the British population only pay their dentist a visit when a problem arises. Whether this problem is relatively minor, such as a chipped tooth, or when the patient is in significant pain; this is certainly not the way to make the most of available dental care.

Emergencies

Naturally, when a patient, irrespective of whether they have seen us recently or not, contacts Mike Allen’s Dental Practice, in pain; we will do all that we can to see them the same day to alleviate the suffering. As always, we ask patients to contact us as soon as they possibly can so that we can fit them in the same day, where possible.

Regular appointments

Whilst we will, of course, help all patients who are suffering from dental pain caused through oral health neglect, it is through regular visits to our Burton Upon Trent dentists where patients will tend to gain the most benefit.

Through regular visits, decay should be minimised and any fillings completed quickly and easily. We can even use an aesthetic tooth coloured filling if desired, and maintain the structure of the tooth without the dark  appearance of traditional amalgam versions. If decay is allowed to spread too far, the tooth may need to have a crown attached to maintain its strength, or even, on occasion, be removed altogether and replaced by a substitute such as the increasingly popular dental implant.

Gum disease

It is not just dental decay that must be kept in check though. One of the most pernicious problems in oral health is that of gum disease. Whilst there may be obvious signs of gum disease, such as sore or bleeding gums; it is also quite possible for the signs and symptoms to be barely noticeable. However, the bacteria may still be causing problems for the patient and in advanced cases bone loss can result, potentially leading to tooth loss.

By visiting one of the dental hygienists at Mike Allen’s Dental Practice, the spread of gum disease can be kept in check. In most cases, this will be done using a simple procedure called a ‘scale and polish’. This simply involves the removal of build up plaque from the teeth and gums.

Providing that this is carried out in the early stages and monitored through regular dental visits, gum disease should not be a major problem. If left for long periods of time though, the treatment may need to be more invasive, and, in severe cases may result in the loss of teeth if the bone is compromised and insufficient to hold them in place.
