Are You Tired Of Eating Softer Foods?
Ill fitting dentures, or weak teeth, can make us avoid some foods.
If you have been wearing dentures for some time, you may have got used to them moving around in the mouth from time to time, and also become accustomed to choosing softer foods to eat in order to work around their lack of stability.
Whilst a modern diet does offer some variety if you only eat soft foods, don’t you long to be able to bite into a crunchy apple or accept a sweet that is offered to you without first having to check it isn’t a chewy toffee? If so, then now might be the time to consider an alternative to loose dentures.
Dental implants
At Mike Allen’s Dental Practice, some of our Burton patients have done just this, and now happily chew away without a care in the world about whether their teeth can handle it. How do they do this? The answer lies in dental implants.
Although some dental surgery is required to place implants, once placed, they could well last for twenty years, and possibly more. Their longevity will depend on a number of factors, especially how you care for them. We will provide full information about this if you have implants placed, but essentially, good brushing, flossing and hygienist visits should be all that is necessary.
How stable and secure is an implant?
Unlike dentures, which are made to fit on the gums, dental implants are placed in a much more secure manner. To place the implant, a small hole is made in the jawbone beneath the gum, and the implant placed into this. The implant is then allowed to fuse with the bone, before a final crown is attached to the implant to complete the tooth replacement.
If any of our Burton patients are concerned about the procedure to place an implant, we are happy to discuss this with you and answer any questions you may have. We would say, at this stage, that the procedure is generally considered to be no more uncomfortable than many other dental procedures. It’s well worthwhile and at the end of it, you will have a replacement tooth that should last you for a very long time.
Stable dentures?
Perhaps though, you have become fond of your dentures? If so, you will be pleased to know that implants can be used to stabilise them. By using just a few implants, your dentures will remain stable and no longer move around in your mouth.
