Why whiten your teeth?

What does the treatment entail?

The first step of this treatment is to make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy. There is little point in whitening your teeth where decay or gum disease is present. Presuming that you have good oral health, the next step is to discuss what you hope to achieve from the treatment.

Some patients like to go for the maximum whiteness possible, as often seen on celebrity smiles. This can radically improve the whiteness of your teeth which some people want but others may prefer something that draws less immediate attention and just improves the shade of their teeth just a few shades. Our whitening treatment can be adjusted to the level of improvement that you want and we will discuss this with you during your consultation.

Once you have decided on the shade of whiteness that you want, we will take impressions of your teeth. The impressions are then sent to a laboratory for the trays, in which the whitening gel will go, to be prepared for you. On their return you will be given these, a whitening gel and guidance on how to apply the treatment in the comfort of your own home. Although this treatment can be easily applied by you at home, we will, of course, be available should you have any questions or queries that you need answering.

Although you should start to notice some improvement after just one week, the full effect will be seen in two to three weeks. It is worth bearing this in mind if you are hoping to achieve your new whiteness for a specific occasion such as a wedding or party.

One-off or maintaining white teeth?

There are generally two types of patient that come to our Burton dental clinic for this treatment. There are those who are probably more or less happy with their teeth but would like to ‘spruce them up’ for a special occasion. Weddings are especially popular for this as people want to look their best for their special day and to look back at the photos and be happy with their smile.

Others are looking for an ongoing improvement in the colour of their teeth. The good news is that this can be done. The results of a teeth whitening procedure will be visible for some time before the teeth start to lose that sparkle. Because this treatment can be repeated as often as necessary though, all it takes is for the treatment to be repeated.

Each individual is different and we offer a personalised service to help you maintain white teeth over a period of time and will adjust this to your individual needs. It is likely that you will be able to use the same trays for some time, helping you to reduce the cost. We will need to monitor this though as people’s teeth can move and it is important that the trays fit securely so as to minimise the likelihood of the whitening gel coming into contact with the lips or other soft tissues of the mouth.
