Protecting The Enamel On Your Teeth
Some simple tips from our Burton dentist.
Keeping the enamel on our teeth strong and intact plays a key part in avoiding problems such as tooth decay and sensitivity. This layer of the tooth is very hard, and prevents bacteria from entering the softer parts of the tooth where the nerves are stored. Unfortunately, once it becomes weakened and compromised, decay is likely to follow.
In today’s blog, we look at a few things that patients can do to keep this important part of the tooth in good health.
Think before you drink
The enamel of the teeth is compromised when it is attacked by acids which largely come from our diet. For most of us, choosing what to eat and when plays a large part in how healthy our teeth are. One of the biggest culprits for damaged enamel seems to be fizzy drinks. Not only do these generally contain high levels of sugar, but it also now thought that the fact that they are carbonated is also a contributory factor.
Even natural foods though, can be acidic. Citrus fruits are a good example of this and although high in vitamin C, they are also quite acidic and can cause damage to the enamel.
Whilst we don’t wish to spoil anyone’s enjoyment of their diet, it is worth considering both how much of these products you consume and also when. The longer sugars are stuck to the enamel of the teeth, the more time they have to do damage. Where possible, try to consume these as close to your regular brushing time as possible.
How to brush your teeth
It should go without saying that brushing your teeth is important in order to remove the sugars and bacteria from the teeth and gum line. How you do this is important too. First of all, make sure that the toothpaste you are using contains fluoride. This helps to strengthen the enamel, protecting the rest of the tooth. You should also make sure that you do not scrub your teeth too hard. Some people do this with the best of intentions, but it can actually contribute to the gradual wearing down of the enamel over time.
Finally, remember to floss or use an inter-dental brush to remove the bacteria and sugars from between the teeth. Some patients do seem to find this a little tricky, but our Burton dentist and hygienist is available to offer advice on the best method to do this.
Hopefully, this simple advice will help you on the route to having strong and healthy teeth. Naturally, regular dental checks are also essential and if you have not seen a dentist for some time or have perhaps moved into the Burton area and are looking for a dentist, why not call Mike Allen’s Dental Practice today on 01283 845345.
