Some might try to do without for a while but most people will seek to replace lost teeth, especially if they are at the front of the mouth, leaving a very visible gap. The best known solution for this, of course, is wearing dentures. These can present problems for some people though, not least because they sometimes have a tendency to become a little unstable. This also causes friction between the dentures and the gums which can lead to soreness. Dentures also have a reputation for being somewhat ‘fiddly’ to clean as those of you who wear them very likely know.

Keeping your dentures clean

Unlike brushing your teeth, dentures have to be removed from the mouth in order to be brushed. It is wise to put a towel over the sink as you do this. More than one person has had to contact their dentist due to dentures breaking as they were dropped in the sink. Not only do you have to brush them, but dentures should also be removed from the mouth and soaked overnight, sometimes in a solution that helps to remove bacteria and other deposits that build up on the artificial teeth. This is quite inconvenient and can be socially awkward in certain situations.

Finally, if you use denture adhesive, you may have to remove this from the dentures and your gums as well. All in all, the whole thing can be quite a messy business.

What about dental implants as an alternative?

Just a brief reminder for patients of SG Dental and Implant Centre that dental implants are an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone and allowed to fuse with it. Once this has occurred; usually around three months, a crown is then attached to provide a strong and secure artificial tooth. It is true that this does require minor surgery; something that dentures usually don’t, but, once integrated into the mouth, dental implants really come into their own.

Not only do they provide a strong and stable solution to missing teeth, enabling you to eat foods that might prove quite difficult for dentures, but looking after them is also really easy, and much more so than the cleaning of dentures.

How do you clean dental implants?

This is quite a common question that we get asked at our Burton dental practice and it makes sense to ask this; especially if you have been put off a little by the thought of cleaning dentures. There is special cleaning that is required for the integration phase of implants and our dentists will advise you about this. Generally though, it just requires a little care and patience. Once the dental implant is fully implemented though, things start to become much easier.

The answer to the ‘how to clean’ question is simple. It is basically the same as you do your own natural teeth. It is important that you do this well, paying special attention around the gums. The biggest threats to teeth implants are periodontitis and peri-implantitis, both related to disease in the gums.

So what should you do?

1 – Brush your teeth diligently – when you do this, make sure to brush around the gum line so that any food and bacteria is effectively removed. You should also apply this to your natural teeth, as you should the following advice as well.

2 – Floss between your teeth – many dental issues arise initially between the teeth where too many people fail to clean well enough. Toothbrush bristles rarely reach this area effectively and you should floss to significantly improve the effectiveness of your cleaning.

3 – See the dentist and hygienist regularly – your Burton dentist will want to monitor the health of your implant as standard, but we also strongly recommend that you have your teeth and your implants professionally cleaned by our on-site hygienist. This is a great way to help keep your gums healthy and prevent gum disease related problems. If this is neglected, there is a real risk that your implants may become loose and eventually fall out. Despite this, it really isn’t hard to stay on top of this improved cleaning regime.

There are, of course, many other advantages to dental implants. The strength and stability is a major factor as is the fact that they provide one of the most natural looking tooth replacement options available. The one benefit that people are often especially grateful for is that they don’t have to make any major changes to their life to accommodate the cleaning of their dentures, and the lack of privacy thus can sometimes entail. If you brush and floss your teeth correctly now, you need have no concerns about maintaining healthy dental implants, and we are always here to help you to do just that.

If you would like more information about teeth implants or have any questions arising from this blog, please do contact SG Dental and Implant Centre at our Burton clinic on 01283 845345.

Why caring for dental implants is a lot more straightforward than maintaining dentures.
